Area 4 · 1945 — 2011

US Army
Mannheim.

For more than six decades, US forces were a natural part of Mannheim. The city was one of the largest US Army garrisons in Europe — with barracks, housing areas, schools and an entire American infrastructure in the middle of the urban landscape.

Our collection remembers the daily life, service, and culture of those decades: from the GI in Coleman Barracks to the German-American neighborhood in Käfertal and Sandhofen. The last units left in 2011 — what remains are memories and objects.

On display

  • US Army uniforms from Korea to Iraq
  • Field equipment and operational gear
  • Patches, insignia and unit pennants
  • Documents and photographs from the Mannheim posts
  • Everyday items from the PX stores
A foreign army that became home — and a piece of Mannheim that is now history.
